YanChan Produced Bridges Toronto And South Asian Classical Music On “Stay Familiar”

Toronto producer and musician YanChan Produced is bringing two worlds together on his latest release, “Stay Familiar,” featuring Toronto artist Kwazi and Hindustani classical singer Mitika Kanwar.

For YanChan, the record is bigger than just another collaboration. It’s a reflection of where he comes from and the city that helped shape him.

Raised in Scarborough, YanChan grew up surrounded by Toronto’s hip-hop and pop culture while staying connected to his Tamil roots. That mix plays a major role in his sound today. On “Stay Familiar,” he brings traditional South Asian instrumentation like the mridangam and veena into a modern production without making either side feel forced.

The result feels less like two genres being mashed together and more like a sound YanChan has been working toward naturally.

Kwazi brings the Toronto edge to the record, while Mitika Kanwar’s classical vocals give the song another layer completely. Together, the three artists create something that feels familiar enough to connect right away, but different enough to stand out.

For YanChan, that balance is part of a bigger mission.

As a professionally trained mridangam player, he wants to introduce more listeners to Carnatic music, a style rooted in South India and Tamil culture, while showing that traditional sounds don’t have to stay locked into one space or generation.

Toronto has always been a city where cultures collide, and “Stay Familiar” is another example of what can happen when artists lean into that instead of trying to fit into one box.
